Good and evil have bickered and bruised each other since the dawn of it all...but what of madness? In the land of Fabul familiar characters are nothing like the nursery rhymes and storybooks told us they were. Masked prisoners, picaroon captains, devious witches, and gallant wolfmen are just some of the citizens of Apologue fighting against the cruel King Coal. Yet there is something else stirring amidst the shadows of the nothingness. A group of madmen who owe their allegiances only to unbridled chaos and aberration. Under the banner of Folly they've come to spread about a philosophy that will bring all sanity to its knees. Yet perhaps there is some semblance to their charge. From the flying picaroon ship of The Conviviala, to the Glazed Citadel in the Frosted Mountains, to the fractured world of Dementia; Dauger and the other members of Propriety must fight to uphold righteousness and reason.

Rhyme Reason The Fallacies and Foibles of our Fairytale Friends eBook Shaun Conde Spelman

Rhyme & Reason is an entertaining and exciting fairytale adventure. A parallel novel in the revisionist tradition, it gathers familiar characters from folklore and fantasy into the world of Fabul, where an insurrection has broken out that pits the rebels of Propriety against the tyrannical King Coal. Into this good vs. evil tale, Conde Spelman inserts another menacing threat: the forces of Folly, a chaos-wreaking evil that threatens to trump all adversaries and plunge the fairytale world into madness and nothingness.

Our ragtag band of protagonists includes a werewolf, his knitting-needle-wielding wife, an ugly witch, and a masked man. They are later joined by a salty crew of picaroons, pirates of the air who command a flying ship (and, later, a flying whale). Some traditional moral allegiances are flipped, the inversion providing some novelty and fun as the reader finds herself rooting for the wolf man in his showdown with the red-hooded assassin and later with the pirate captain as he faces off against the devious, flying boy. Fans of Lewis Carroll will recognize and delight in the many allusions to his works, from the magical inter-dimensional mirrors to the dark illogic that surrounds Folly.

Spelman is adept at crafting a compelling narrative in an absorbing fantasy world populated by characters the reader cares about. At times dark, Rhyme & Reason is leavened throughout with droll observations and humorous asides. Venturesome readers will appreciate Rhyme & Reason's thrilling action sequences, full as they are of whimsy as well as suspense (in what I trust is a fantasy first, one confrontation culminates in a high-camp catwalk fashion-off). But greater than any convention Spelman can employ or twist, or magical mirror that he can conjure, is the mirror that he holds up to his readers, the one that invites his audience to meditate on things like the variance between appearances and reality or on valor in the face of against-all-odds adversity, and, most movingly, on sacrifice, second chances, and redemption.

Rhyme Reason The Fallacies and Foibles of our Fairytale Friends eBook Shaun Conde Spelman Reviews

Amazing. Highly recommended
An exciting adventure into the world of nursery rhymes with surprising and unexpected twists and turns. I liked that woven into this, as in all good fairy tales and nursery rhymes, there is a philosophy. We read of the complexity of good vs. evil and are reminded of the rewards and consequences.
Rhyme & Reason is a great first outing from an up-and-coming novelist. The story is fanciful, but dark enough to keep it from feeling like a true children's book.

Conde Spelman does a nice job balancing making classic childhood characters into lunatics while leaving their backgrounds in tact just enough that they remain recognizable. He crafts the story in such a way that it makes you wonder why you never noted most nursery rhyme characters are completely insane.

Though it is dark, Conde Spelman has enough humor to keep it from bogging you down in his twisted fantasy world. His pacing makes the 444 pages turn quickly, despite delving into the complicated question of what is truly good and evil.

Anyone who is into fantasy literature will definitely appreciate Rhyme & Reason. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.
I've given this book two stars instead of only one because I didn't _hate_ it. It had amazing potential. But I only read about a quarter of it and had to put it down because it was riddled with errors. From missing words and incomplete sentences to confusion of then/than, pore/pour, and others, I was continually being ripped out of the story because of mistakes of this sort. I'm not usually the sort of person to stop reading something just because of poor grammar (reading fanfiction in my younger years made me realise that some people with talented imaginations are rather poor writers, technically) but it wasn't something I could work around in this case.
This book shows the faces of humanity and the perspective and dimensions required to truly understand a person. Within the pages are classic fairytale characters twisted with a new story that keeps the reader on his/her toes. The author's voice is clear and humorous, though embedded in the humor and drama of the story is a message of the difference between who one is and who one has the potential to become.
What I particularly enjoyed was that the characters and heroes in the book were far from perfect, not always the most attractive or intelligent, and even some with a very dark past. Rhyme & Reason opts to give the "bad guys" a chance to redeem themselves and give readers their full story. It conveys the important message of second chances.
In this book you will find that the author stirs not only a spell of his own but stirs the colors of the imagination.
I recommend it to anyone hungry for a classic story of good vs. evil but in a most unique and satisfying way.
