This book is top notch.
Wow. As a teacher, I laughed and cried. I was reading about myself. Genius. I loved every poem. Brilliant.
I downloaded this on a lark because I coach Prose and Poetry in a small Texas school. I'm always on the lookout for unknown poetry. Little did I know this book is about me; or rather my people - theater and speech teachers. Beautiful and painful, it details what good teachers do and why they do it. Some of the lines were so accurate, I felt cut to the bone.
After reading Michael Powell's "Teaching Poetry Poems for a Teacher's Everyday" I felt that I had seen the heart of a true teacher. One passage that revealed how deeply committed to his students and their welfare is, jumped out to me "If a teacher never does anything that could get them fired, they shouldn't have been hired to begin with"
I wish more administrators realized that teaching is more than opening a book and having weekly lesson plans that have to be turned in and then followed religiously.
I've only just begun reading this book, but I love it! It's wonderful. It makes me laugh, cry, and feel almost sick to my stomach at times. Anyone could enjoy, but it's a must for teachers to read. Unless you are or have been a teacher, it is my belief that you have absolutely no idea what teachers go through!! Teaching is the most honorable, important profession, yet it is often undervalued. Thank you for these poems to renew my faith in why I became a teacher in the first place! (And for the record, I've never bothered to write a review about anything, even though I had opinions, but this just had to be said.) Thank you!
